‘5 Minutes Alone’ with Not the Girl Next Door and Arjuna
Written by Angela Mockbee on March 6, 2020
What do you get when you mix some melancholy, a dash of 90’s vibes and honest, real rawk music? Arjuna. Blasting us with their new single “Irate You”, the band had a chance to talk with me about their music.
I give you ‘5 Minutes Alone’ with Arjuna and Not the Girl Next Door Show.
Tell us a little about the band, where are you from? How did you meet?
Well, the base of the band started back in JR High in Arkansas. I’ve known Jason (drummer) since since age 9. We grew up down the street from one another in Johnson Arkansas. In 2000, I’m moved to Tulsa and ended up joining the army and moved around the country for about 13 years. Jason and Dan met in the 2000’s in Siloam and formed different groups together. I moved back in 2016 and we basically just kind of picked up where we left off.
What kind of music would you describe your sound as? Who are some of your musical influences?
Our sound is sort of Nü Metal’ish sound with hints of 80’s synth, grunge, and hard rock. Our influences are Deftones, Faith No More, Tool, Alice In Chains, Danzig, Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, The Outfield.
Let’s talk about the newest single “Irate You”. Do you have plans for music videos coming up?
We currently haven’t gotten far enough in the recording process to fully envision a video but I would say it’s probably inevitable. We are mainly focused on finishing our EP as well as honing our recording craft as we are doing it all ourselves.
How does the collaboration process work as far as writing/composing music?
When we are firing on all cylinders, the writing process does not take long. We can usually bang out a song or two in one rehearsal.
How does it feel when you put all your hard work to the test and perform live? Do you have any crazy performance band/fan stories?
We love playing live. That’s what we practice so hard for. Going into this year we agreed to start and finish an album before booking more shows , but since we are doing it ourselves (learning as we go) in combination of only being able to get together once a week, it’s going a bit slower than our live performance patience can handle. Every week we are getting the itch to get back out there. Especially our out of state shows which we would really like to put more emphasis on. As far as crazy fan stories, not really. Mainly just equipment malfunction and flipping out, as we are a three piece and rely on technology to create our signature sound.
Let’s shake it up a little. Tell us some strange facts about the band, that virtually no one would know.
Dan and Jason are Tai Kwon Do fanatics. Jason has his black belt. Lol… our band name is a folklore legend in country of India. Needless to say we get messaged and requests from citizens of India on a regular basis. But due to barriers in communication we can’t really explain who and what we are… They just see the name and probably think we are some Folklore fan club.. We chuckle over it but hey, at least we are reaching the other side of the world in some capacity.
What do you have planned for the rest of 2020?
For 2020 we would like to wrap up our EP. Start the show machine back up and get out there. Maybe there’s a video in the near future. Definitely play more out of town gigs and maybe even do a short multi state run for a few weeks. Also we’d love to get on more shows like this one. This is the second one in two weeks for 2020 so we are off to a good start.
Thanks for having us on and hope to see you all soon! #TeamArjüna
