‘5 Minutes Alone’ with Not the Girl Next Door and OnesteP
Written by Angela Mockbee on May 2, 2019
Blasting through the air waves from Kyiv, Ukraine, Onestep is slaying listeners with their single “Page of Agony”. Mixing melodies with high energy vocals and grit, this post-hardcore band slams listeners in the face with sound.
OnesteP had a chance to spend ‘5 Minutes Alone’ in an interview to find out a little more about the band and what is going on in their world in a quick and unfiltered interview.
Tell us a little about the band, where are you from, how you met?
We are from Kyiv, Ukraine. The band is notable for punchy and heavy sound mixed up with melodic and soothing vocals and melodic patterns. The band’s current lineup comprises Siddy (vocals), Eugene (guitars, production), Taras (guitars), Bogdan (bass), Valerian (drums) of which Bogdan and Eugene are the founding members.
How is the music “scene” in the Ukraine and has it changed at all in the past ten years for rock music?
The music scene in Ukraine is constantly improving and becoming appealing around the world with each year. In recent times, bands like Jinjer, Stoned Jesus, Make me famous etc. have achieved mainstream success around the world in rock/metal scene. Also bands like Okean Elzy, Detach, Space of Variations, Sinoptik, O.Torvald, etc have been quite famous in the local scene. The improvement can also be noted by the improving status and facilities of local festivals and shows across Ukraine, where bands like Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Korn, Papa Roach, Bullet for my Valentine, Scorpions, Marilyn Manson etc. have performed in last few years.
Let’s talk about the new music. Can you tell us a little about what the song “Page of Agony” and what it is about?
To start with, we had an EP released back in 2017 called Haunting Satellites. Also, we have released three new singles “Endless Chain”, “Page of Agony” and “Blur of the Clarity” and the response has been pretty warm and great.
“Page of Agony” is one of the songs that is quite personal to most of us and is about a situation when you assume the reality, understand the needs of a certain scenario but it’s hard for you to open up and speak about it, because you have tried it all before and all you can do is hope for the good or wait for the time to heal all the damages it has done to you. “Page of Agony” symbolizes the timeline that you don’t want to revisit, because you know it will bring back the nightmares that you have been through or going through.
How does the collaborative process work with OnesteP, as far as composing/creating music?
The process is simple and basic. We start with jamming or coming up with individual ideas that later start reforming into song structures. What’s important and matters to us are the new and unique sounds, patterns and combinations we can come up with. In today’s music scene it’s very hard to be unique, because your recipe gets cracked the same day by the music freaks and cover musicians/artists. So we don’t chase the trend, we believe in our process, try to stick to the basics and keep experimenting till we achieve our own goals. We stick to self-production(home production) as it helps us to be as natural as we want it to be but at the same time try to improve with each and every day (and also because it is affordable 😉).
Do you have any crazy live performance/fan stories that have happened to the band over the past years?
Once we were playing a local show at a small club and it was jam-packed. Everybody was moshing and slamming really hard and suddenly some guys pushed a guy onto the stage and he fell directly on the guitar processor and changed the preset to exactly what was needed at that point and nobody noticed it except the band. Now that’s an interesting co-incidence, especially during a live show where reaction is such a huge factor.
Fun weird facts. Tell us some fun weird facts fans may not know about the band.
Few years back, the band really had hard time searching for a new vocalist and it went on for nearly two years. So it was our last meeting and we decided to quit as a band, because it was not going anywhere. Few hours later, to our huge surprise, Siddy sent us his demos and we have been active since then.
Destiny and luck most likely play their role in our life.
What does 2019 have in store for OnesteP?
We have lots of new stuff and music coming up. We are really excited about it and can’t wait to finally end this writing/production rage and share it with our fans across the globe. Also, we would like to thank all our listeners and fans for supporting us so far.
