“5 Minutes Alone” with Rags and Riches and Not the Girl Next Door
Written by Angela Mockbee on June 8, 2020
Invading the air waves and soon the United States, Kentucky natives, Rags and Riches are taking a hold of the music industry with a fervor. Blasting on to the scene in 2018 with their single “Speed of Sound”, the band has propulsed with aggressive speed since they begun.
I had a chance to talk to the band about their new release “Don’ Look Down” and get to dig in to learn a little about the world of Rags and Riches in an unadulterated, unedited interview.
Tell us a little about the band, where are you from? How did you meet?
My brother Peyton and I(Tanner) Whitt started writing for RAGS AND RICHES in 2017. From there, we did all the behind the scenes work until March of 2019, when we started performing shows. During that time we added long time friend Jonah Fryrear.
What kind of music would you describe your sound as? Who are some of your musical influences?
Our sound is described as Alt/Pop/Rock. Our top 5 influences are Twenty One Pilots, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Imagine Dragons, X Ambassadors, Billie Eilish, Jon Bellion.
Let’s talk about your newest release “Don’t Look Down”. Tell us what the song is about and what inspired the song?
This song is written about the battle that comes from mental illness and depression. Those thoughts that go through someone’s head is written within this song. We hope this song can be a light in someone’s dark time to remind them they are not alone and to always keep their head up. stay healthy, stay safe, and don’t look down.
How does the collaboration process work as far as writing/composing music?
Every song is a completely different process. Some start with Peyton showing me a beat he has been working on. Others start with me having lyrics or a melody for him to go off of. There have been a few songs where he has made a beat and I had lyrics that just so happened to match up perfectly.
How does it feel when you put all your hard work to the test and perform live? Do you have any crazy performance band/fan stories?
That is by far one of the greatest feelings. We love performing these songs live and creating memories and moments with fans. The best stories for us always are the ones where a fan says how inspired or encouraged they are from our music. That is the reason we started RAGS AND RICHES in the first place.
Let’s shake it up a little. Tell us some strange facts about the band, that virtually no one would know.
Well for starters we slept in our van for over 68 days from October-December of 2019. We were on the road the entire time and still had a blast even with our horrible body aches.
Peyton and I were working at a rug shop when we came with the name RAGS AND RICHES.
Much of our close dynamic and musical chemistry comes from sharing the same influences.
We write, record and produce all of our own music in our basement.
What do you have planned for the rest of 2020?
We will be releasing 3-4 additional singles coming later in the year. Also, getting back to touring is very important to us, so we are planning two smaller East Coast tours. The band will also be joining The Extreme Tour this year, which is kicking off August 27th.
