Sprinkle a little melody, ripping guitars, some sludge, doom and grit, voila, The Less Fortunate. Smashing with sound, this Midwestern band is ready to tear it up, moving into 2023 with a vengeance.

Recently releasing their new single, “Alternate Reality” I had a chance to interview The Less Fortunate, to get the know the band and to learn some insight on their new release in an unadulterated interview. Make sure to check out The Less Fortunate, their music and always #spreadtheloveformusic by sharing the music you love!

Tell us a little about the band, where are you from? How did you meet?

The Less Fortunate is a 6 piece metal band formed in Joplin, Missouri. The idea was born with drummer Logan Kelley and bass player Bill Cottrill and adding guitar player Dalton Golden and Vocals Cory Taunton. The band started to build up, adding Blanca M too cleans. We started writing material and playing shows!

Dropping our first self titled album in 2019, with many changes and getting through Covid, also our band growth Blanca M left the band and we added in Jesse Guerrero to clean vocals to round out the band! We recently dropped two new singles 5:41 & “Alternative Reality”.
What kind of music would you describe your sound as? Who are some of your musical influences?
The band’s musical influences are all over the board. From metalcore to nu metal and death core. To name a few would be, LOG Signs Of Swarm, Korn, August Burns Red, Fit for A King, Deathtones, Spirit Box and many many more. To describe our sound best would be Metalcore/Nu-metal, grunge, metal.
Let’s talk about the newest single, “Alternate Reality”. Tell us what the song is about and what inspired the song?
Our current single “Alternative Reality” is out now on all platforms. We wanted to dive into a song and style that we would not typically do. Doom and more slow paced. We would like to show our audience that we want and diverse music style. The song was organized and wrote by Nolan Smith and Dalton Savage formally of (Eye Creatures). The band added flavor with drums from Logan Kelly and Bass from Bill Cottrill. Jesse and I then added vocals that we thought were fitting, mostly inspired by every day struggles and pain. We really enjoyed getting out of our normal zone to write this one! Recorded by Jesse Guerrero Visual by Tyler Cobillas.
How does the collaboration process work as far as writing/composing music?
Usually the collaboration processes starts with in idea from one of the members and we usually bring the idea to each other for opportunities to grow. Usually tying to branch off the idea, getting other members involved does help the process and ideas grow!

How does it feel when you put all your hard work to the test and perform live? Do you have any crazy performance band/fan stories?

It feels amazing to finally get your ideas and music on stage and in front of people, especially when they can connect to the music and enjoy what we are putting out!
Having those moments really do make everything worth it. One of the crazy moments I can recall on a show was our bass player Bill clotheslines out guitar player Dalton on a very important show he was dropped. He got right back up and kept rocking! He was terribly embarrassed, but he pulled threw like a champion!
Let’s shake it up a little. Tell us some strange facts about the band, that virtually no one would know.
 Some strange facts about TLF
-5:41 was inspired by the Joplin Tornado in 2011 and many of us were in the storm and over came and rebuilt.
-Most members in the band were in states other in Missouri but some how we all ended up in MO haha.
-Colter Steffens from Rage is My Rival is the star in our video Inside the Mastermind!
What do you have planned for 2023?
We are currently in the works of writing and recording our new album through Colleague Records in KS. We have plenty in store for you guys! We plan on adding more shows to fill out the rest of the year! We are continuing to grow and expand our music! Thank you and much Love
