Central Illinois natives, Brand New Sky are ready to rock the air waves and ready to tear it up at The Canopy Club with Lines of Loyalty on September 10, 2022.

Recently releasing their debut EP, Endure, I got a chance to interview the band about their new music, upcoming show and to dive into the depths of the band.

Tell us a little about the band, where are you from? How did you meet?

Brand New Sky is a five piece band hailing from Central Illinois. Started several years back by Chris Wilson, guitar, as a part of a different project, he was eventually joined by Josh Genung on guitar and Tre’ Roberts on bass. Later, Andrew Russell joined on drums and shortly after that, Kelly Whisenand brought in the final piece of the puzzle when she joined on vocals. And the rest is, as they say…history.

What kind of music would you describe your sound as? Who are some of your musical influences?

We would describe our music as modern hard rock. Emotionally charged, introspective lyrics with delicate and instantly memorable melodies, amongst a hard rock wall of sound. We all have quite different and varied influences, which we feel plays as one of our strengths as a band. Kelly hails from more of a modern pop-style singing background, but is well steeped in many different musical styles, having sung for years in a friend’s cover band. Chris has a modern hard rock and metal background, while Andrew comes from a rock and extreme metal background, but both are the same age and grew up in the Nu-Metal era, so that genre is also a big influence on both. Josh is influenced by everything from New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands, to modern hard rock and metal. Tre’s influences range from old-school progressive rock, to modern prog and Djent bands.

Let’s talk about the newest single “Brand New Sky”.

On our upcoming EP, “Endure”, the first single we are releasing is our self-titled song “Brand New Sky”. It is a song about reassessing your current lot in life, and coming to terms with the fact things are not where they should be, where you want them to be. And determining at your core that you are going to step back, and make significant changes so as to set things straight, and get to where you want to be.

How does the collaboration process work as far as writing/composing music?

A good summation of our writing style starts with a vision, compiled with one or several riffs. We collectively work to structure and form the song musically into that vision and then we send it to Kelly to write the vocal melodies and come up with the theme.

How does it feel when you put all your hard work to the test and perform live? Do you have any crazy performance band/fan stories?

There’s no better feeling than connecting with a crowd playing the music you’ve poured your heart and soul into creating. One of the hardest times for us was when Covid hit just a couple months after we played our first show. Thankfully, things have started opening up again and we’re finally getting to play our music out there for everyone to hear. As far as a crazy performance story goes…at our very first show, a bunch of people already knew some of our songs from the first EP and were singing along with Kelly, word for word. That was pretty friggin’ cool.

Let’s shake it up a little. Tell us some strange facts about the band, that virtually no one would know.

As far as the band as a whole goes, we had a tough time during Covid and a couple of us walked away from the band, and almost music, altogether. But around late 2021, we decided we have put too much into this endeavor, and got too positive a response to our first show, to let it die on the vine. Plus, we just “believe” in our music…we feel we have something to offer people.

Let’s talk about your upcoming show at The Canopy Club on September 10, 2022, what can concert goers expect?

We are absolutely STOKED about the show coming up with Lines of Loyalty! They are a great upcoming band and we couldn’t be happier to open for them. We’re excited to bring our energy to the stage and connect with the fans. We’re releasing “Endure” right before the show, so we’ll be riding high on that energy and ready to crush the stage with them.

What do you have planned for the rest of 2022?

We have more shows coming up and a few more songs in the works – one is about ready to head to the studio. After these songs finish, look for us to release our first full-length.
